Abstract
Two hydrolytic enxymes, alkaline and acid phosphatase, were studied histochmically in 25 term, 19 preeclamptic and 4 eclamptic placentas. It is the purpose of this report to describe certain histochemical reactions of the placenta of the toxemia, and to present interpretations of the possible functional significance of these reactions. The chorionic villi were prematurely aged as judged by their cytological and gistochemical apperance in the placenta of the toxemia. Many of the villi showed premature aging of the syncytium. There were noticeable changes in the amount and distribution of both alkaline and acid phosphatase. Two most striking histochemical features in the toxemic placenta were the abnormally great quantity of both alkaline and acid phosphatase activities presented within the syncytium clothing the villi and both enzyme activities were prematurely increased in the trophoblastic syncytium.
